The hashtag (#) is the most popular internet symbol known after the ‘at’ (@) symbol. A decade ago, it had no real meaning or use to the internet beyond signifying ‘number’. Today, it’s ubiquity is unmatched.

We have seen brands and causes rise to the top of trends as a result of proper hashtag use and we have seen causes bring down brands with hashtags. One thing is clear, to compete effectively on the social web, there has to be an understanding of this phenomenon and how to use it.
The do’s and don’t of hashtags
- Don’t over-hashtag a single tweet. Even Twitter recommends no more than two hashtags per tweet.
- Choose one hashtag to speak for your brand and strengthen consumer awareness
- Choose a hashtag that is easy to remember and crystal-clear.
